Sydney Arts news: Dusty the musical
May 11th 2006 02:21
I really don't like musicals...but for those who do I have it on good authority that Dusty the musical is pretty good.
Dusty the musical is the new show from the writers of Shout! and tells the story of yet another popular music figure, Dusty Springfield. Written by John-Michael Howson, David Mitchell and Melvyn Morrow, and directed by Stuart Maunder, Dusty features Tamsin Carroll in the title role. She was widely acclaimed when the show made its world premiere in Melbourne in January. Also appearing are original cast members Deni Hines, Mitchell Butel, Glenn Butcher, Kaye Tuckerman and Trisha Noble.
Known as the White Queen of Soul, Dusty Springfield was born Mary O'Brien in London in 1939. After experiencing some success with the vocal group The Lana Sisters, she formed a folk trio with her brother and a friend. The group was called The Springfields and so O'Brien began to perform under the stage name Dusty Springfield. The Springfields experienced some success in the United States, and while touring there Dusty fell in love with the sounds of Motown and left her group to focus on a solo career. The rest is history: Dusty experienced a string of hits, including The Look of Love and You Don't Have to Say You Love Me and went on to forge a successful solo recording career.
Season 23 Mar-27 May 2006 at Star City's Lyric Theatre
