Neil Maizels: Australian avant- garde
October 30th 2006 22:47
Hailing from Melbourne, Neil Maizels has a new portfolio of work that he has just released. He attaches this epigram -
"Welcome to neil maizels's Portfolio. Browse neil maizels's body of work:
The strangest thing is that a painting is no more about the visual
than is a telegram about the messenger on a bicycle who delivers it."

Take from it what you will.
His message got us 'talking' I look through his portfolio and see the hazy images and the thread count of his work. His world is very earthy with shades of ancient strands and words like titles of cleansing, glowing, unscreaming, silent muffled in the night. He has love and pain and emergence and his collage then is so beautifully orchestrated too. That is my favourite.
I would like to know how he gets such vibrant colours?
I think art is art to whomever it speaks to. I hesitate to use that word 'resonate' but it does and to each his own. To some Picasso is art to others sheer bollocks. Can I say that ?
I am off to the ob/gyn now

I would appreciate a response to the message I left. If only yes I agree or no I don't.

I think if that's what he's saying then he chose a rather clumsy way to put it... I do like your interpretation though, and I also agree with your philosophy on art is what you make it.

Your mum must have raised you well. I do like a person who has the grace and etiquette you possess.

interesting stuff to make dreams on -
that should be enough for Art to aim for:
and that's where vibrating colour comes from.
Art is not part of visual culture - it stands outside of it,
and observes, and resonates and emphasizes
and feels.
hopefully ...

I do thinbk if one has to explain oneself it negates the entire feeling. Too many people talk too much- the smart ones listen and observe-
People get confused when they can't understand- when something is outside their 'frame' of reference.
Like my ex would watch an art house movie and couldn't understand it- he would scratch his head in annoyance.
Honestly there are times when I can't fathom some Bergman genius piece of crap.....
Are we really supposed to understand it....especially when most (a generalization) of these creators were on drugs....one would have to be on drugs to understand the mind behine the artist.....
